Job interview question and answer How many people are there flying in airplanes over the US right now
Job interview question and answer How many people are there flying in airplanes over the US right now Job interview question and answer How many people are there flying in airplanes over the US right now?Posted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun This is an example of a case interview question the type used by management consultancies and sometimes investment banks when recruiting. The purpose of such questions is to see your logic and ability to identify crucial issues when tackling a complex problem. Ex-management consultant and now Director of Strategy and Innovation for Inchcape Australia, Stephen Scheeler, takes us through his step-by-step approach in answering this question. Remember, there is no correct answer or one way of answering, and the number you come up with is not as important as how you go about finding it. Following Scheelers thought processes will help you to see how this sort of question can be broken down into key variables and assumptions, as well as how to go abou t articulating your logic. The key here is to think about what information you have (or can estimate) which can help you get to the answer. You need to be clear about your logic and assumptions, and be clear-minded enough to be able to sense-check the ultimate answer you arrive at. First, I clarify the question what is meant by airplanes? All planes, private jets, commercial flights only, military, fly-overs? And what is meant by right now literally right this second? What is meant by over the US? Landmass only? Does this include ocean territory? What about Alaska and Hawaii? I will assume that airplanes can be divided into four categories commercial passenger, freight, small private and military. There will be other types (like charters and crop-dusters) but to simplify things I will leave them aside. I assume that these flights are only those flying domestically or to an international destination (but still over the US). I will exclude planes flying over the US from one countr y to another. I assume that right this second means 6.45pm. I assume that over the US means over the landmass of the contiguous 48 states. Then I look at each type of plane to look for drivers of the ultimate number. For commercial passenger planes, I assume a good driver would be the number of airports in the USA. I assume there are 10 giant airports 20 major airports 50 medium airports 100 small airports Giant airports would have about 20 flights per hour taking off, 18 hours per day. So, about 360 flights per day. At any one time, perhaps 15 per cent of these flights would be in the air. I would assume that the average plane would contain 250 people. So, thats 360 x 15% x 250 x 10 airports = 135 000 people. Major airports would have about 10 flights per hour, 18 hours per day. Fifteen per cent would be in the air at any one time, with an average of 200 people on board. Thats 108 000 people. Medium-sized airports would have about 10 flights per hour, 15 hours per day. Fif teen per cent would be in the air at any one time, with an average of 100 people on board. Thats 112 500 people. Small airports would have about five flights per hour, 12 hours per day. Fifteen per cent would be in the air, with an average of 50 people on board. Thats 45 000 people. Freight is trickier to estimate. I would estimate that there are an average of 100 cargo flights per major city in the US per day, and Id estimate there are 200 major cities. Fifteen per cent of these flights would be in the air at any one time. They would have an average crew of five. Thats 15 000 people. For small private planes, Id say there is one private plane for every 500 head of population (300 million people), and that one per cent of these planes might be in the air at any one time, with an average of four people on board. Thats 600 000 x 1% x 4 = 24 000 people. For military I am less sure. Lets assume there are 10 000 military planes in the US (big and small). Lets say five per cent are ai rborne at any one time with an average of 10 people aboard. Thats 5000 people. Now I can add up all the people. The total equals 444 500 people in the air right now over the US. To sense-check this, let me just divide by 200 (the average number on board a commercial airliner). Thats 2222 planes in the air, or 46 over each of the 48 states. Hmm, this seems a bit on the high side, so I may have over-estimated somewhere. I can go back through my assumptions and calculations to see if I can trim the number a bit. However, I dont think Im far off. New Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent job
New Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent jobNew Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent jobNew Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent jobJohn, the seasonal Wildlife Biologist at the Forest tafelgeschirr at Sacramento Ranger Station forgot that he caught two New Mexico Jumping Mice in order to get them on the Engdangered Species List this season. By managing a team of wildlife technicians in managing the Jumping Mouse project, he proved certain Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for his federal resume. The KSAs for a Wildlife Biologist are knowledge of biological practices, techniques and procedures Teamwork Data analysis and research and writing. This example of the New Mexico Jumping Mouse capture would prove these KSAs in his resume and could help him get Best qualified and Referred if a permanent Wildlife Biologist would come up. But John has never written about his specific wildlife biology or habit projects before. Until I came into the classroom and asked him to write about a project that he lead this season. As a federal career trainer, one of the biggest problems I have seen is the fact that the term or temp employees just cant write a resume that describes their specialized experience, knowledge, skills or abilities or background enough to get Best Qualified when the position is offered as a permanent position. Therefore, they might stay a season or temp or term employee for 10 years or more. This is really sad because they do have the KSAs for a permermanent position, if the resume DID demonstrate the specialized experience and KSAs.The turning pointI interviewed John about the New Mexico Jumping Mouse story when I was teaching federal resume writing at Sacramento Ranger Station in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. I had a class of Hot Shot Firefighters, Wildlife Technicians, and Trail Worker Technicians in the class. They have been dedicated to the Forest tafelgeschirr mission at Sacramento for up to 10 years seasonal, temp or term A temp or term position does bedrngnis give the employee the year-round benefits or paycheck that could help that quality employee maintain their family or livelihood.During our class, we started out with writing accomplishments. This is a typical active-learning lesson that I implement to get the class members thinking about special projects, problems and successes that they have achieved in their positions within the last 5 years. I had them look at their resumes to find any accomplishments that are written in the resume, and almost nobody came up with anything written already.New Mexico Jumping Mouse Accomplishment Can help to get referredThen, I had the group write an accomplishment at their table and then share the accomplishment with small groups. Heres a couple of accomplishments that I heard during this accomplishment freewriting lessonWillis wrote about a project that he lead to catch the New Mexico Jumping Mouse. Heres how it looked like after revisionsConducted research to help secure future of Environmental Species Act candidate New Mexico Jumping Mouse while serving as Lead Bilological Technican at the Lincoln National Forest. Developed original protocol to capture the mouse from a wetland, under deadline due to lawsuit over wetland water use. Lead team of four biologists, set out 200 traps, captured and studied two mice from this notoriously trap-shy species within two months. Gathered, analyzed and wrote reports on data, presented findings to community groups. Prepared final report for possibility of endangered species designation, determined suitable habitat for future conservation.John wrote about a trail building project that involved teamwork, safety lessons and meeting deadlines. Heres how it looked like after revisions As Recreation Tech, led building of three-quarter mile trail near Sacramento Lake, New Mexico. Determined best location for trail, considering steepness of land, fallen debris and conditions of ground. Managed and ensured safety of five team of unskilled trail workers aged 15-to-18. Assigned tasks based on skills of team members, cleared debris, obtained building materials. Supervised installation of chipper materials and jupe for trail laydown. Installed tables, fence and signs. Trail from parking area to picnic area was completed within two weeks and is now open for public use. Both of the Forest Service workers admitted that they had never written about a project in their resume before. Both of the employees decided that they could write about projects there in the Sacramento District as part of their resumes. We found keywords for their resume form the USAJOBS announcement andI taught them how to match a job announcement to their resume, including analyzing keywords from the KSAs and Specialized Experience and the duties section of the resume. When they analyzed their resum es against a target announcement they found that they had almost zero matches between the HR recruiter keywords and their resume keywords.Do not deflate your questionnaire answersThe class members learned about the Questionnaire Self-Assessment Test. They learned that they needed to give themselves all the credit possible for the questionnaire. I taught them how to not deflate their score, but to give credit based on experiences throughout all of their positions. The Questionnaire answers are scored automatically and are the first cut in terms of the qualifications for the position.Do not upload your resume, copy and paste into the builderAnd finally, another big change in their federal resume writing strategies was that they would copy and paste their resume into the USAJBSO builder, instead of uploading their private industry resume into the USAJOBS system. Some of the FS workers did not include months and years for each of their positions. In fact, one of the employees just wrote 2000 to present and described ONE position. They did not break out the positions by season with months and years. The HR specialist who is looking for one year specialized experience would not find the right information in this One Block work experience section.Create a separate job block for each seasonal position, with months and years and duties/projectsThis wildlife biologist will now have 6 Job Blocks, one for each season, describing the duties, projects, teamwork and responsibilities for each seasons work. The HR specialist will add up (literally with a calculator), the one year experience (52 weeks, 40 hours per week) of this work, and determine that he has the specialized experience for a certain grade level. The details of the Work History section for HR are critical to showing qualifications for a certain position and grade level. The class was a total success and a turnaround for FS seasonal, temp and term workers who would like to apply for permanent positions with a mor e competitive federal resume.Forest Service is moving from Avuecentral.com to USAStaffingAnother good news item is that the Forest Service will be moving to USAStaffing instead of the www.avuecentral.com system. The employees feel that the USAJOBS and applicationmanager.gov systems are easier than the former avuecnetral.com automated recruitment system.

Computerized Special Operations Resiliency Test (CSORT)
Computerized Special Operations Resiliency Test (CSORT)Computerized Special Operations Resiliency Test (CSORT)When you first visit a recruiting schreibstube and you know you want to join Navy Special Warfare, you should know you have to ace the fitness test, score well on the ASVAB, and the C-SORT. You cannot study for the CSORT, but you can and should prepare months in advance of your first recruiting office visit having studied the ASVAB and practiced the elements of the Navy Special Warfare/Operation Physical Screening Test (PST). Testing Resilience in Special Operations Recruits The C-SORT or Computerized-Special Operations Resiliency Test is an online test recruits will take at the recruiters office and is created to assess a future SEAL recruits ability to handle stress. Some call it the Mental Toughness Test or the Resiliency Test, but the test is actually structured to assess the recruits ability in the following areas Performance strategies The use of stress coping tools such as self-talk, breathing, and goal setting abilities are tested in this section.Psychological resilience How a recruit deals with stressful and unpleasant situations as well as mental challenges and threats will also be tested in this section.Personality traits This section is mainly used for statistical analysis as there are many personality traits that make it through SEAL training. A recruit can only take the C-SORT one time, and there is no study guide. The best advice is to read the questions carefully and answer honestly even though there may be more than one answer to questions that fit your character. The C-SORT is graded on a scale of one to four (1 to 4).If you score a 4 on the C-SORT you are considered to have a high resiliency level. Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test The recruits Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test (PST) is also considered as part of the entry-level grade to get into SEAL training. The BUD/S PST consists of the following events 500-yard swim (10 minu te time to transition to PT area)Push-ups - Max effort in 2 minutesSit-ups - Max effort in 2 minutesPull-ups - Max effort (10-minute transition to ansturm area)1.5 mile timed run The two cardiovascular endurance events of the PST - the 500 yard swim time and 1.5-mile run - are timed and added together and then combined with the grade of the C-SORT.If you score well on both, you can quickly qualify for SEAL training after NavyBoot Camp. However, a score of 1 on the C-SORT is the lowest, and you will have to combine a much higher physical screening test (run and swim time) score to prove you have the ability to work hard with a strong foundation of fitness. Recruits take the PST several times while in the Delayed Entry Program (usually 2 to 3 times a month) with a SEAL Mentor in the recruiting district.By showing the recruiters you can work hard and improve your fitness test scores, you can get to SEAL Training (BUD/S) even without a high C-SORT score. Having high scores of near 8-minu te swim or less and a near 9-minute run or less shows effort on the recruits part and a will to work hard to achieve those scores.Recruits will also have to score high on the ASVAB as well. Advice for Recruits Consider your first PST with the SEAL Mentor in your recruitingdistrict YOUR job interview. You will be placed in one of two groups after taking this test for the first timethe passing group or the failing group. If you fail, you will be required to train on your own and come back multiple times until you pass it.If you do not pass the PST eventually, you will be sent to boot camp anyway having not pre-qualified for SEAL training and you will be forced to do a different job. Be patient and train hard prior to walking into the recruiters office the first time. You should be able to master the competitive scores on the PST and have taken the PST on your own dozens of times that you can pass it with ease the first attempt. Once you pass the PST and score well enough to be com petitively selected in a nationwide draft, you will get your shipping out date to boot camp and then onto the follow-on training called Pre-BUD/S. This is a 6- to 8-week course that physically prepares you for the events at SEAL training and SWCC Training. After Pre-BUD/S, you will be shipped to Coronado, CA and attend SEAL training.

Why We Need 5G Cellular Service
Why We Need 5G Cellular Service Why We Need 5G Cellular Service Why We Need 5G Cellular Service Read Part One The Critical Need for 5G Cellular ServiceThe new data-sharing network that defines so many technical applications would be almost impossible without 5G. Because it transmits data mora efficiently, 5G has the potential to be 40 times faster and suffer shorter lag times than the current 4G standard. That speed is critical for autonomous cars, where timely decisions need to be made to avoid crashes.Real-time data is used to control self-driving cars and change their behavior on the basis of observations. Image VTT Technical Research Institute of Finland5G will also be able to transmit video instantly over long distances, allowing one vehicle to share live images with many others.5G will bring more transmission capacity and bandwidth, Ojanper said, so we are looking at a see-through application where vehicles traveling in a queue can get a view of the front of the pick-up truck a nd adjust their actions accordingly in terms of takeover.Top ASME.org StoryFight Climate Change, Build the WallEditors PickNavy Sails Into Supply Chain with Metal 3D Printing Researchers at VTT are running cars in hazardous conditions in the Lapland town of Sodankyl, where 11 feet of snow falls in a typical year, to show how 5G can broadcast information to improve autonomous and semi-autonomous car navigation. Sensors in a manually driven car and fixed weather stations alongside a test track will collect information on ice build-up, which can reduce friction on the road surface. The readings will be sent over a 5G network to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, which works with VTT to analyze the data. If the road is determined to be slippery, an alert will be sent to a 5G-equipped Martti self-driving car thats also running on the track. We can pull sensor data, transfer it to a back-end server in the 5G test network and send out the warnings, and test the maneuvers and actions in t he Martti when it receives the warnings, VTTs Ojanper said. It can go around an obstacle or choose another route if slippery road conditions are detected in one stretch of road. The trial is based on low-bandwidth 5G IoT communications, but cars could exploit high-bandwidth capabilities. For instance, onboard cameras could send images to cloud services to determine hazardous road conditions, and that video could be shared in case of accident, Ojanper said. 5G will allow transmission of more extensive data, including video and phone call to emergency centers. The new data sharing network that defines so many technical applications would be almost impossible without 5G.Other experiments have shown the potential of 5G in connected cars. A June 2018 experiment in Detroit by the 5G Automotive Association showed how cars could get information on traffic congestion and other road conditions beyond the immediate view of the vehicle.5G may also enable manufacturers to deliver faster over-the-a ir software updates to vehicles and allow quicker diagnosis of performance issues. While seamless fixes to minor problems might seem like a boon, even automotive researchers admit it could raise questions of who really owns the car. What happens if your car will be behaving differently compared to how you originally planned to use it? Its a bit of a safety risk, Ojanper said.5Gs potential is yet to be fully realized, but one thing is certain It makes IoT devices and sensors in robots, machines, cars, and drones matter unlike any other past technology.Agam Shah is an independent technology writer in New York City.More Exclusive Stories from ASME.orgUsing the Eyes of Killer Shrimp to Design a Super Camera5 Ways How Digital Farm Technology Is Transforming AgricultureHow Engineers Can Resolve Conflict and Save Their Business For Further Discussion

What You Can Get out of Attending a Business Conference
What You Can Get out of Attending a Business ConferenceWhat You Can Get out of Attending a Business ConferenceIf youre on the lookout for a new job- whether youre currently working or job searching while unemployed- attending a geschftlicher umgang conference can be a powerful tool in your job search. That said, conferences can be pricey. To make the experience budget-friendly, opt for local gatherings or reach out to organizers to see if there are scholarships or discounts available. Attending a conference is an investment of your time and money, but it can net you lifelong connections, a new insight into your industry, interview opportunities, and many other benefits and opportunities. 5 Big Advantages of Attending a Conference 1. Youll learn about your industry. During interviews, hiring managers and other potentials colleagues will inquire about your past experience and education. But theyll also be interested in your knowledge of the overall field. Having an awareness of you r industry, from thought leaders to trends, is helpful when youre answering interview questions. Conferences make it easy to gain these insights. You may also find out more about specific companies, too. That can help both in interviews and in your titelblatt letter. In your cover letter, you can namecheck presentations from a companys employees or reference conversations you had with staffers during the vorstellung. This helps make your interest in the company seem informed and genuine. 2. Youll make connections. Networking really does make a difference Not only will having broad connections help you find out about jobs (sometimes even before theyre posted), but mentioning someone who works at the company in your cover letter strengthens your application. If the notion of networking or making small talk makes you feel a bit queasy and nervous, it can be helpful to remember that nearly every attendee at a conference is eager to meet new people. Plus, its easy to start a conversation with basic questions like, Whats your favorite presentation so far? and What do you think of conferences location so far? Use your elevator pitch in conversation with your new acquaintances. If you have a meaningful or extended conversation, exchange business cards or find the persons profile on LinkedIn and connect. 3. Youll discover opportunities. Many job opportunities are not advertised or listings are posted on job boards only after the hiring manager or supervisor has a candidate in mind. During conversations before and after sessions and during the social parts of a conference, you might discover that a company is looking to fill a position. Or, you may find out more about your dream company from talking to conference attendees, and be able to connect with someone for an informational interview once the event is over. 4. Youll get ideas and inspiration. Like a brainstorming session, a conference can be a good way to generate ideas. You may find that after a conference, you fi nd a new field youre interested in pursuing, or a new type of job. Any great way to take advantage of being at a conference Ask everyone you meet (and particularly people you admire) how they got to their position. (You may even find a person who will eventually be your mentor through a conference.) 5. Youll improve your job-search skills.Does small talk make you anxious? Or does presenting or asking questions in a large group leave you sweaty and blushing? Do you stumble over your elevator pitch? A conference can be a place to practice those skills, which are often essential for successful interviews and on-the-job performance. Plus, What to Do When the Conference Is Over Youre missing out if you think of a conference as just being a day-long or weekend-long event. Once the event is over, its time to follow up with the people you met at the conference. The easiest way to do this is to connect on LinkedIn. You can also follow new connections on Twitter. A more time-consuming tas k - but one that can solidify a connection - is to write an email to eachperson you met. Reference your conversation and let the person know youd like to stay in touch.
