New Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent job

New Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent jobNew Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent jobNew Mexico Jumping Mouse Habitat Story Can help a Seasonal Wildlife Technician get a permanent jobJohn, the seasonal Wildlife Biologist at the Forest tafelgeschirr at Sacramento Ranger Station forgot that he caught two New Mexico Jumping Mice in order to get them on the Engdangered Species List this season. By managing a team of wildlife technicians in managing the Jumping Mouse project, he proved certain Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for his federal resume. The KSAs for a Wildlife Biologist are knowledge of biological practices, techniques and procedures Teamwork Data analysis and research and writing. This example of the New Mexico Jumping Mouse capture would prove these KSAs in his resume and could help him get Best qualified and Referred if a permanent Wildlife Biologist would come up. But John has never written about his specific wildlife biology or habit projects before. Until I came into the classroom and asked him to write about a project that he lead this season. As a federal career trainer, one of the biggest problems I have seen is the fact that the term or temp employees just cant write a resume that describes their specialized experience, knowledge, skills or abilities or background enough to get Best Qualified when the position is offered as a permanent position. Therefore, they might stay a season or temp or term employee for 10 years or more. This is really sad because they do have the KSAs for a permermanent position, if the resume DID demonstrate the specialized experience and KSAs.The turning pointI interviewed John about the New Mexico Jumping Mouse story when I was teaching federal resume writing at Sacramento Ranger Station in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. I had a class of Hot Shot Firefighters, Wildlife Technicians, and Trail Worker Technicians in the class. They have been dedicated to the Forest tafelgeschirr mission at Sacramento for up to 10 years seasonal, temp or term A temp or term position does bedrngnis give the employee the year-round benefits or paycheck that could help that quality employee maintain their family or livelihood.During our class, we started out with writing accomplishments. This is a typical active-learning lesson that I implement to get the class members thinking about special projects, problems and successes that they have achieved in their positions within the last 5 years. I had them look at their resumes to find any accomplishments that are written in the resume, and almost nobody came up with anything written already.New Mexico Jumping Mouse Accomplishment Can help to get referredThen, I had the group write an accomplishment at their table and then share the accomplishment with small groups. Heres a couple of accomplishments that I heard during this accomplishment freewriting lessonWillis wrote about a project that he lead to catch the New Mexico Jumping Mouse. Heres how it looked like after revisionsConducted research to help secure future of Environmental Species Act candidate New Mexico Jumping Mouse while serving as Lead Bilological Technican at the Lincoln National Forest. Developed original protocol to capture the mouse from a wetland, under deadline due to lawsuit over wetland water use. Lead team of four biologists, set out 200 traps, captured and studied two mice from this notoriously trap-shy species within two months. Gathered, analyzed and wrote reports on data, presented findings to community groups. Prepared final report for possibility of endangered species designation, determined suitable habitat for future conservation.John wrote about a trail building project that involved teamwork, safety lessons and meeting deadlines. Heres how it looked like after revisions As Recreation Tech, led building of three-quarter mile trail near Sacramento Lake, New Mexico. Determined best location for trail, considering steepness of land, fallen debris and conditions of ground. Managed and ensured safety of five team of unskilled trail workers aged 15-to-18. Assigned tasks based on skills of team members, cleared debris, obtained building materials. Supervised installation of chipper materials and jupe for trail laydown. Installed tables, fence and signs. Trail from parking area to picnic area was completed within two weeks and is now open for public use. Both of the Forest Service workers admitted that they had never written about a project in their resume before. Both of the employees decided that they could write about projects there in the Sacramento District as part of their resumes. We found keywords for their resume form the USAJOBS announcement andI taught them how to match a job announcement to their resume, including analyzing keywords from the KSAs and Specialized Experience and the duties section of the resume. When they analyzed their resum es against a target announcement they found that they had almost zero matches between the HR recruiter keywords and their resume keywords.Do not deflate your questionnaire answersThe class members learned about the Questionnaire Self-Assessment Test. They learned that they needed to give themselves all the credit possible for the questionnaire. I taught them how to not deflate their score, but to give credit based on experiences throughout all of their positions. The Questionnaire answers are scored automatically and are the first cut in terms of the qualifications for the position.Do not upload your resume, copy and paste into the builderAnd finally, another big change in their federal resume writing strategies was that they would copy and paste their resume into the USAJBSO builder, instead of uploading their private industry resume into the USAJOBS system. Some of the FS workers did not include months and years for each of their positions. In fact, one of the employees just wrote 2000 to present and described ONE position. They did not break out the positions by season with months and years. The HR specialist who is looking for one year specialized experience would not find the right information in this One Block work experience section.Create a separate job block for each seasonal position, with months and years and duties/projectsThis wildlife biologist will now have 6 Job Blocks, one for each season, describing the duties, projects, teamwork and responsibilities for each seasons work. The HR specialist will add up (literally with a calculator), the one year experience (52 weeks, 40 hours per week) of this work, and determine that he has the specialized experience for a certain grade level. The details of the Work History section for HR are critical to showing qualifications for a certain position and grade level. The class was a total success and a turnaround for FS seasonal, temp and term workers who would like to apply for permanent positions with a mor e competitive federal resume.Forest Service is moving from Avuecentral.com to USAStaffingAnother good news item is that the Forest Service will be moving to USAStaffing instead of the www.avuecentral.com system. The employees feel that the USAJOBS and applicationmanager.gov systems are easier than the former avuecnetral.com automated recruitment system.

Computerized Special Operations Resiliency Test (CSORT)

Computerized Special Operations Resiliency Test (CSORT)Computerized Special Operations Resiliency Test (CSORT)When you first visit a recruiting schreibstube and you know you want to join Navy Special Warfare, you should know you have to ace the fitness test, score well on the ASVAB, and the C-SORT. You cannot study for the CSORT, but you can and should prepare months in advance of your first recruiting office visit having studied the ASVAB and practiced the elements of the Navy Special Warfare/Operation Physical Screening Test (PST). Testing Resilience in Special Operations Recruits The C-SORT or Computerized-Special Operations Resiliency Test is an online test recruits will take at the recruiters office and is created to assess a future SEAL recruits ability to handle stress. Some call it the Mental Toughness Test or the Resiliency Test, but the test is actually structured to assess the recruits ability in the following areas Performance strategies The use of stress coping tools such as self-talk, breathing, and goal setting abilities are tested in this section.Psychological resilience How a recruit deals with stressful and unpleasant situations as well as mental challenges and threats will also be tested in this section.Personality traits This section is mainly used for statistical analysis as there are many personality traits that make it through SEAL training. A recruit can only take the C-SORT one time, and there is no study guide. The best advice is to read the questions carefully and answer honestly even though there may be more than one answer to questions that fit your character. The C-SORT is graded on a scale of one to four (1 to 4).If you score a 4 on the C-SORT you are considered to have a high resiliency level. Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test The recruits Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test (PST) is also considered as part of the entry-level grade to get into SEAL training. The BUD/S PST consists of the following events 500-yard swim (10 minu te time to transition to PT area)Push-ups - Max effort in 2 minutesSit-ups - Max effort in 2 minutesPull-ups - Max effort (10-minute transition to ansturm area)1.5 mile timed run The two cardiovascular endurance events of the PST - the 500 yard swim time and 1.5-mile run - are timed and added together and then combined with the grade of the C-SORT.If you score well on both, you can quickly qualify for SEAL training after NavyBoot Camp. However, a score of 1 on the C-SORT is the lowest, and you will have to combine a much higher physical screening test (run and swim time) score to prove you have the ability to work hard with a strong foundation of fitness. Recruits take the PST several times while in the Delayed Entry Program (usually 2 to 3 times a month) with a SEAL Mentor in the recruiting district.By showing the recruiters you can work hard and improve your fitness test scores, you can get to SEAL Training (BUD/S) even without a high C-SORT score. Having high scores of near 8-minu te swim or less and a near 9-minute run or less shows effort on the recruits part and a will to work hard to achieve those scores.Recruits will also have to score high on the ASVAB as well. Advice for Recruits Consider your first PST with the SEAL Mentor in your recruitingdistrict YOUR job interview. You will be placed in one of two groups after taking this test for the first timethe passing group or the failing group. If you fail, you will be required to train on your own and come back multiple times until you pass it.If you do not pass the PST eventually, you will be sent to boot camp anyway having not pre-qualified for SEAL training and you will be forced to do a different job. Be patient and train hard prior to walking into the recruiters office the first time. You should be able to master the competitive scores on the PST and have taken the PST on your own dozens of times that you can pass it with ease the first attempt. Once you pass the PST and score well enough to be com petitively selected in a nationwide draft, you will get your shipping out date to boot camp and then onto the follow-on training called Pre-BUD/S. This is a 6- to 8-week course that physically prepares you for the events at SEAL training and SWCC Training. After Pre-BUD/S, you will be shipped to Coronado, CA and attend SEAL training.

Why We Need 5G Cellular Service

Why We Need 5G Cellular Service Why We Need 5G Cellular Service Why We Need 5G Cellular Service Read Part One The Critical Need for 5G Cellular ServiceThe new data-sharing network that defines so many technical applications would be almost impossible without 5G. Because it transmits data mora efficiently, 5G has the potential to be 40 times faster and suffer shorter lag times than the current 4G standard. That speed is critical for autonomous cars, where timely decisions need to be made to avoid crashes.Real-time data is used to control self-driving cars and change their behavior on the basis of observations. Image VTT Technical Research Institute of Finland5G will also be able to transmit video instantly over long distances, allowing one vehicle to share live images with many others.5G will bring more transmission capacity and bandwidth, Ojanper said, so we are looking at a see-through application where vehicles traveling in a queue can get a view of the front of the pick-up truck a nd adjust their actions accordingly in terms of takeover.Top ASME.org StoryFight Climate Change, Build the WallEditors PickNavy Sails Into Supply Chain with Metal 3D Printing Researchers at VTT are running cars in hazardous conditions in the Lapland town of Sodankyl, where 11 feet of snow falls in a typical year, to show how 5G can broadcast information to improve autonomous and semi-autonomous car navigation. Sensors in a manually driven car and fixed weather stations alongside a test track will collect information on ice build-up, which can reduce friction on the road surface. The readings will be sent over a 5G network to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, which works with VTT to analyze the data. If the road is determined to be slippery, an alert will be sent to a 5G-equipped Martti self-driving car thats also running on the track. We can pull sensor data, transfer it to a back-end server in the 5G test network and send out the warnings, and test the maneuvers and actions in t he Martti when it receives the warnings, VTTs Ojanper said. It can go around an obstacle or choose another route if slippery road conditions are detected in one stretch of road. The trial is based on low-bandwidth 5G IoT communications, but cars could exploit high-bandwidth capabilities. For instance, onboard cameras could send images to cloud services to determine hazardous road conditions, and that video could be shared in case of accident, Ojanper said. 5G will allow transmission of more extensive data, including video and phone call to emergency centers. The new data sharing network that defines so many technical applications would be almost impossible without 5G.Other experiments have shown the potential of 5G in connected cars. A June 2018 experiment in Detroit by the 5G Automotive Association showed how cars could get information on traffic congestion and other road conditions beyond the immediate view of the vehicle.5G may also enable manufacturers to deliver faster over-the-a ir software updates to vehicles and allow quicker diagnosis of performance issues. While seamless fixes to minor problems might seem like a boon, even automotive researchers admit it could raise questions of who really owns the car. What happens if your car will be behaving differently compared to how you originally planned to use it? Its a bit of a safety risk, Ojanper said.5Gs potential is yet to be fully realized, but one thing is certain It makes IoT devices and sensors in robots, machines, cars, and drones matter unlike any other past technology.Agam Shah is an independent technology writer in New York City.More Exclusive Stories from ASME.orgUsing the Eyes of Killer Shrimp to Design a Super Camera5 Ways How Digital Farm Technology Is Transforming AgricultureHow Engineers Can Resolve Conflict and Save Their Business For Further Discussion

That said, conferences can be pricey. To make the experience budget-friendly, opt for local gatherings or reach out to organizers to see if there are scholarships or discounts available. Attending a conference is an investment of your time and money, but it can net you lifelong connections, a new insight into your industry, interview opportunities, and many other benefits and opportunities. 5 Big Advantages of Attending a Conference 1. Why Business Acumen Counts for Every Employee

Why Business Acumen Counts for Every EmployeeWhy Business Acumen Counts for Every EmployeeWhy Business Acumen Counts for Every EmployeeMarch 16, 2012 Blaszczyk, Managing Editor, Resource CenterAre your employees geschftliches miteinander savvy? Do they have the geschftsleben acumen to understand cash flow, net profit margin and PL and their impact on the companys bottom line?Having a clear understanding of how business works enables employees to be mora productive and engaged, argues Kevin Cope, author of Seeing the Big Picture (Greenleaf, 2012.)In this interview, Cope outlines the five key drivers of business and why business performance measurements should be shared and explained with all employees from the stock boy to the business owner.Monster Your book, Seeing the Big Picture, advocates that everyone within a company, fromtop to bottom, have the business acumen to understand how business works.Kevin Cope Im a big believer that real success happens when employees consistently m ake smart decisions, work more efficiently, and really try and see the big picture without losing sight of the details.Monster Do younger employees more often lack business acumen?Kevin Cope A decade ago, when I founded Acumen Learning and started training people on business acumen, I thought our target audience would be front-line and younger employees, because I assumed everyone else understood business fundamentals. What our research has found is that you can go well into the middle ranks, and sometimes the senior ranks of organizations and find individuals who struggle to speak the language of business and if they do speak it fluently they often talk over peoples heads.ur work with some of the worlds most profitable companies, including 16 of the Fortune 50, has taught us that companies are becoming silos of functionally brilliant people, say in HR, IT, sales, marketing, operations, etc.But this highly-specialized workforce perpetuates a real problem offices and cubicles full of smart people who are elend necessarily smart businesspeople.Monster What impact can a lack of business acumen have on smaller companies or start ups who utilize Gen Y talent?Kevin Cope Our up-and-coming workforce wants to be engaged. They want to feel like they are making a difference.Gen Yers want to feel like theyre part of something bigger and when theyre valued for their individual contributions they thrive. So you really need to help them see the big picture (the purpose) and clearly understand how they are making a difference. The mantra for a lot of start-ups these days could be, Its not what we make, its what we make possible. Which isnt bad, but you have to make a profit in order to make anything possible. So companies today, both large and small, have to get clear on what their mission is and then hire and develop people who make smart, fast, and profitable decisions that propel the mission forward.Monster What financial information should all employees know?Kevin Cope I wou ld advise leaders to do three things1) Identify 5-7 key business performance measures that reflect performance. unterstellung include cash flow, net profit margin, revenue growth year over year, customer satisfaction, new store openings, etc. Even a privately held company can find a measurement that can be shared with employees.2) Teach your employees why these measures are important and what impacts them. And dont assume employees know what the measures mean give lots of explanations and examples.3) Regularly share results and trends on these numbers. Be sure everyone has line of sight as to how they are progressing and improving. Provide ideas and direction on how employees can improve results.Monster How can this knowledge benefit a companys profits and bottom line?Kevin Cope When people are brought into the companys missionand they understand how their actions impact the bottom line, they are more likely to do the right things. One key principle here is measurement. Measurement b rings focus and awareness, which brings action and improvement. In our business acumen training we share the example of UPSs efforts to track CO2 emissions and gasoline usage. They figured out how to reduce the number of left hand turns on delivery routes, which takes more engine idle time.As a result UPS has saved 10 million gallons of fuel (a great impact to the bottom line) and has eliminated thousands of tons of CO2 emissions (a great purpose).Monster Can you share any examples of smaller companies that do this well?Kevin Cope The CEO of A Small Orange,a hosting company out of North Carolina, explained how hes tempted to split up their support costs between marketing and operating expenses. When we provide great service (which we try to do as frequently as possible), our customers notice and appreciate that. A lot of times it results in them telling their friends and social networks about us, which leads to more sales and greater customer loyalty. So heres a company that values and measures customer service not so much as a cost center, but rather as a potential profit center.Remember that measurement brings focus and attention, which leads to awareness and improvement. As a result, the company is profitable and growing.Monster What are the five key drivers of business?Kevin Cope The 5 business drivers areCashProfitAssetsGrowthPeopleThe first three are based on a companys three financial statements, the statement of cash flows, the PL, and the balance sheet.Growth is what investors, employees and customers expect and it doesnt happen without the last driver People. Weve taught this model to over 80,000 people in more than 30 countries.Monster Why put people at the center of these five key drivers?Kevin Cope We teach that the people driver refers to both the employees and the customers they serve.Acompanys ability to impact the other 4 business drivers all hinges on great employees anticipating the needs of their customers. While companies can copy your strateg y and even your product to some degree, people are the one unique element that is nearly impossible to mimic. For example, while other airlines have tried to copy the strategy of Southwest Airlines, they cant duplicate its corporate culture, which in the end is one of Southwest Airlines key competitive advantages.Monster Are people commodities?Kevin Cope People are not commodities. Great companies like Zappos recognize that a company culturethat comes from putting people in the center of their business, instead of some other economic driver, is a real competitive advantage with real economic benefits. As CEO Tony Hsieh says, We are just a service company that happens to sell shoes.Author BioKevinCope is President and CEO of Acumen Learning. He is a trusted resource and confidant to business leaders from around the world and a sought-after keynote speaker. For over twenty-five years, Kevin has promoted the idea that the brightest minds in business understand the essence of how a compan y makes money, and they use this knowledge to drive their decisions. The Best Advice From 3 Female Recruiting Technology Influencers

The Best Advice From 3 Female Recruiting Technology InfluencersOn my own I will just create, and if it works, it works, and if it doesnt, Ill create something else. I dont have any limitations on what I think I could do or be. Whether a vice president, co-founder, or editor, our picks for the top three female influencers in recruiting technology have no limitations. Theyre determined to change the face of recruiting for both job seekers and employers and its working. Every single one of these inspirational ladies knows exactly what its like to fight, push, and pull their way to the top of a predominantly male field. Heres their advice on climbing the male-dominated ladder Consider every opportunityI once had a colleague who was paralyzed by impostor syndrome. She would write down the opportunity and the advice that she would give a frie nd about it so that she could clearly evaluate it before her doubt crept in. It was her hack to make sure she never counted herself out from taking big leaps forward.Never count yourself out from taking any major leaps. womenintechClick To TweetAt Duo, we train our sales team to help, help, ask. Rather than trying to hide the qualities that may differentiate you as a woman or as a mother, give those around you an opportunity to see exactly how those qualities make you a world class contributor in your space.I spent a good portion of my career minimizing the things that differentiated me from my male colleagues in the tech space. I tried not to draw attention to my prioritization of family balance because I didnt want to be perceived as weak or unfocused.I realized it was my responsibility to contribute to changing the way women, and specifically mothers, are perceived in the tech space. As a leader, I needed to challenge the norms. So, I started to speak up about my experience and about my belief that we can and need to elevate and celebrate the way women. From the President June 2015

From the President June 2015 From the President June 2015 From the President June 2015A Bright Future for ASMEWhen ASMEs first president, Professor Robert H. Thurston, gave closing remarks following his first year as president in 1881, he made a statement very similar to ASMEs present-day mission, which is to utilize engineering knowledge to improve the quality of life. In comparison, he used these words, to ensure to everyone absolute freedom to learn and to labor in any department of industry, with fitting recompense for all the zeal, intelligence and good work that we offer the world. Its really astonishing how these words resonate throughout ASMEs 135 years of existence and, still, form the root of ur present-day mission. As I gave my final remarks as ASME president, on June 9 at the Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., I stated how our founders defined mechanical engineering as a profession while shaping the world similar to how we are shaping the world today by unleashing techn ologys potential. Although methods change, ASME is not reinventing the wheel we are using available knowledge and innovation to reach toward a brighter future. Technological innovation has provided numerous opportunities for ASME to explore new market-focused strategies, particularly in the areas of energy and advanced manufacturing. Converging technologies of advanced sensors and the Internet of Things into smarter, well-integrated systems are giving us safer, better diagnostics and inspections. Also, 3D printing is broadening opportunities for creative solutions and learning processes. One of the things that really excites me about our future is the effort weve made to engage students in the engineering process. Students are learning that while engineering is both inspiring and challenging, it can also be a lot fun. The collaboration between the ASME Foundation and NASA was particularly exciting as K-12 students participated in the inaugural 3D space challenge through Future En gineers. This program gave students the opportunity to actually design tools and other gadgets that astronauts can use onboard the International Space Station. ASME Standards Certification continues to proactively address the issues that will enable ASME to face future needs and demands that ensure safety and reliability in technology. A new online pipeline standards compendium (PTB-9) is now available for users and for public understanding of federal pipeline safety regulations. Another project, in the works, has been developing ways to bring standards education into curricula, so that students are prepared to work as engineers from the start. It has been a great honor to serve as president of ASME this past year and an even greater privilege to do so with the leadership of our Board of Governors, our volunteers, ASME Executive Director Tom Loughlin and the ASME staff. Five things that will make you much happier

Five things that will make you much happierFive things that will make you much happierTheres enough advice onhappinessfloating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make another miserable. In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. Dalai LamaUCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.Korbs research demonstrates that your thoughts- and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts- have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain. Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brains reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.Gratitude creates happinessIm not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine- the brains happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things arent going well for you. Thats because you dont actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appreciate. Thi s train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.Labeling negative feelings dilutes their powerThere is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brains prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesnt just work with your own emotions labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.Making decisions feels goodSimilar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a good enough decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. Weve always known that, but now theres scientific research that explains why. Making a good enough decision activates the dorsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity- which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process. It helps you to lend a handTaking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you arent overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness. Our brains are wired for spurHumans are social animals, to the point tha t our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brains response to pain. You might think thats bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.Bringing it all togetherKorbs research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planni ng. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely youll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.Travis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This column first appeared at LinkedIn.

Sustainable Manufacturing The Road Forward

Sustainable Manufacturing The Road Forward Sustainable Manufacturing The Road Forward Its not easy being green. Today, new model electronics hit the market faster than most users are ready to replace their current products. Although consumers may chafe at the brief life expectancies of their phones, toasters, or televisions, the lure of next-generation bells and whistles can be hard to resist. Who among us who bought the iPad when it debuted didnt experience a twinge of envy when iPad newbies got to snatch up the 2.0 version with all its enhancements? And those Flip cameras we all had to have two years ago that have been all but eclipsed by video-enabled smart phones? Opting for one device that does the work of two is a no-brainer, but does the idea of all those discarded Flips ending up in a landfill make you wish there was a better way? Sustainable Manufacturing Engineers working to solve the problems of dwindling safe-disposal options and the drain on natural resources say there is, and its called sustainable manufacturing. But despite their commitment and growing public awareness of the problems, says Professor I.S. Jawahir, a James F. Hardymon Chair in Manufacturing Systems at the University of Kentuckys Department of Mechanical Engineering, there remains one major stumbling block: Engineers are great at developing sustainable products but havent made a convincing business case. Professor I.S. Jawahir. Jawahir, who also is chair of ASMEs Research Committee on Sustainable Products and Processes, says Product planners need to show that high-quality products with all the sustainability attributes can be made more cheaply than those that are not. Thats what economists, corporate leaders, and business people care about most, and the key is maximizing sustainabilitys full power, he says. A notion that sprang from the Lean Manufacturing movement of the 1980s, sustainability began with the rallying cry Reduce, Reduce, Reduce, says Jawahir. In the 1990s, Recycle and Reuse was added to the mantra, and green manufacturing was born. But that only got us so far, says Jawahir, who in 2006 gave sustainability its teeth by adding three more Rs: Recover (the usable materials), Redesign, and Remanufacture. The result is an enlightened approach to product design that extends into the post-use stage, when materials recovered from the old product are redesigned and then remanufactured into the products next generation. People think of the lifecycle of a product as cradle to grave, says Jawahir. But with sustainability, the lifecycle is cradle to cradle. Improving Sustainability The idea of creating a perpetual production loop in which a product can evolve through multiple lifecycles would certainly make a difference. But corporate reluctance to invest in sustainability often hampers engineers abilities to make sustainability central to each phase of a products life. The elements of sustainability that are there are very small, says Jawahir. In fact, there as yet is no widely accepted definition as to what it actually is. For now Jawahir says working engineers can continue to serve as sustainability ambassadors if they: Keep learning: Educate yourself about what it is that makes different products sustainable. Seek out continuing education classes, information on the web, talk to people, says Jawahir. Bringing more professional training into the workplace can also help convince those reluctant to embrace new ideas. Know what youre up against: Sustainable products that seem successful in theory may not be in reality because of limitations that competition can impose, says Jawahir, who observes that the upfront investment in training or hiring may not seem cost-effective unless you think long term beyond the products usable life. Collaborate: Competition and collaboration rarely go hand in hand, but many sustainability issues are too big for firms to tackle on their own. Jawahir, who in 2010 received a $1.5-million grant from the National Institute of Science and Technology to develop metrics for sustainable products and processes, says that is where universities can build bridges. The grant required involves industry, so representatives of General Electric Aviation, Toyota, and Lexmark are all on my advisory board and working together, he says. Be persistent: The commitment to sustainable products has to be in the corporate culture from bottom to top, says Jawahir. So, to successfully pursue sustainable product design, engineers must find firms that share those values. Even when the commitment to sustainability is there, Jawahir warns there will still be roadblocks, particularly for younger engineers wishing to introduce sustainability concepts theyve learned in university. One single engineer cant make all the difference, he says. Marion Hart is an independent writer. Corporate reluctance to invest in sustainability often hampers engineers' abilities to make sustainability central to each phase of a product's life.

What Co-working Space Perks Can Do for Your Career - The Muse

What Co-working Space Perks Can Do for Your Career - The Muse What Co-working Space Perks Can Do for Your Career Whether you’re a digital nomad, remote worker, or an employee at a startup, co-working spaces aim to provide you with the opportunity to curate your ideal work life. And when it comes to the perks of memberships, we have so many to choose from. Most spaces provide the obligatory strong coffee and fast Wi-Fi, of course. But depending on the space, you might also have access to on-site gyms, relaxation treatments, or even break rooms complete with arcade games to offset the stress of your day. Those extras might sound like random incentives on offer to tempt you to sign up (and they might be), but you can also use them to your advantage. They can improve your mood, boost your productivity, and even enhance your professional development. Here’s how all those perks can do more than distract you from your to-do list and actually help you build your career. 1. You Can Focus on the Work, Not the Logistics It almost goes without saying that conducting face-to-face meetings in an actual workspace rather than a random coffee shop makes you look more professional- whether it’s to impress prospective clients or carry out a job interview. Noe ¨l Duan, a writer and the founder and CEO of Argos Artemis, used to find it challenging to find a suitable coffee shop in New York where she could hold a meeting. “You would get there and couldn’t find a seat or it would be really loud and then I would be really embarrassed,” says Duan, who became a founding member of The Wing, a membership club and network of spaces for women. Now there’s always seating and coffee available to have a casual catch-up with a long-time partner in a communal space or to pitch a prospective client in a conference room. And she can focus on the meeting, not on the surroundings. When you’re not rushed, stressed, or relying on unpredictable amenities, your meetings will be more productive- and potentially more profitable. It might sound like a small advantage, but the benefits add up over time. 2. You Can Upskill Your Workforce (Even if That’s Just You!) A key perk of most memberships is the access you have to professional development opportunities, such as seminars, panel discussions, or workshops. Duan, for instance, has taken part in workshops at The Wing on investment and branding to expand her knowledge in areas that are important to her business. The possibilities run the gamut. At Galvanize, for example, you can study coding and machine learning, and at Hacker Lab you can get hands-on training in woodworking, 3D printing, and studio photography. Amber Monaco, Community Manager at Bridge Space in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, curates an education program with at least five free events per month, including legal, accounting, and social media training. Monaco points out that on-site opportunities like the ones she organizes are practical options for those who might not have the resources to spend on training and development, such as freelancers or members of a small team. “It’s unrealistic to think that a company is going to pay for one or two people from the team to leave for a three-day conference,” she says. Factor in accommodation and travel and the expenses accumulate. In the context of a co-working space, you can attend as and when you need to. It saves time and money- and if there is a work emergency, you’re only steps away from your office! Community managers are also conscious of how their members organize their time and schedule events accordingly. If you can’t step away from your work during traditional working hours, look out for “lunch and learn” programs or evening events. With so many options for professional enrichment at most co-working spaces, you can discover new ways of working and brush up on your existing skills and knowledge to help drive your career forward. 3. You’ll Enable Organic Networking and Team Building Co-working spaces don’t just put on work trainings and offer development opportunities. They also host a variety of social events, from pasta-making classes to guest speaker talks. These activities are a fun way to break up your schedule, sure, but they also enable you to meet new people without forcing connections. “Personally I am not someone who likes to go to events that are made for networking,” says Duan. “I hate having to introduce myself and having a business card and people trying to figure out what they can get from you.” Instead, she values interesting programming which allows for natural conversation, so that, for example, “when I go see Hannah Gadsby speak I can just say hi to the person sitting next to me instead of feeling like we’re networking.” For Duan, these serendipitous interactions have developed into professional collaborations. “The whole reason I’m starting my company is through mentors and people I’ve met through my co-working space,” she says. By making casual acquaintances, you build up a network of people to call on in the future: Maybe you’ll find someone to exchange ideas with, approach for advice, or even hire at a later stage in your business. These social events are also a great way to connect with your own team. And getting to know your colleagues outside of work helps create stronger bonds, makes for a more pleasant working environment, and pushes everyone to do better work with one another’s support. It’s also important to remember that while a co-working environment can be an incubator for innovative ideas, your career and business will flourish if you extend your outreach beyond other members. “I think the greatest perk for our members is integrating the larger business community into our building,” says Monaco. It’s not uncommon for local business owners to attend events at Bridge Space, which has strong relationships with key networks like the Chamber of Commerce, the school board, and even the mayor. Making connections with the people and businesses beyond your shared co-working space can be instrumental in moving your career forward in a specific location. 4. You’ll Cultivate Creativity Make the most of not being in a traditional office environment and soak up your surroundings for inspiration and motivation. Some of that can come from the space itself. According to a study by researchers from Harvard University, Syracuse University, and SUNY Upstate Medical University, a greener office environment can have a positive effect on your productivity. Some setups, such as Green Spaces in Denver, are specifically designed for sustainable co-working with natural light and even outdoor spaces. You can also find stimulation in the people and events around you. Your co-members are all kinds of different people doing different things, and just a friendly chat at the coffee machine can provide new perspectives and ideas to enhance your work. Even taking advantage of the professional development opportunities and social events can refresh how you work so that you don’t get stuck in a stale routine. 5. You Can Make Time for Wellness At Work It can be easy to neglect personal care or sacrifice gym commitments when you’re swamped with work. But a co-working space that integrates work with wellness could accommodate a demanding schedule that still allows for activities that sustain your mental and physical health. “There are moments where I know it’s gonna be a very busy period with my clients and any moment I spend outside of [work] I feel personally will be a waste of my time,” says Beverly Rose Nevalga, a communications strategist and digital nomad who uses daily or weekly passes instead of a full-time membership. “So if there happens to be an extra perk where they can bring in those other benefits- like yoga [or] haircuts- and that aligns with my schedule I’m very open to that.” Don’t forget that even if your co-working space doesn’t offer these types of perks in-house, your membership could give you access to deals with local gyms and other lifestyle facilities. So although you’ll have to leave your building, you won’t have to travel too far. And if the offerings in and around your co-working space make it easier to sustain your well-being, you’ll be in a healthier state both physically and mentally to cope with the demands of your work. If you’re paying for a membership at a co-working space, why not make the most of all the perks that come with it? Stop viewing it simply as a space with unlimited refreshments and stylish seating and start using it to your advantage: to develop your skills, find inspiration, and drive your career forward.

Recruit Technology Talent with these Innovative Hiring Tactics

Recruit Technology Talent with these Innovative Hiring Tactics Recruit Technology Talent with these Innovative Hiring Tactics Recruit Technology Talent with these Innovative Hiring Tactics DeZube IT skills are in greater demand than ever. That makes innovative hiring tactics essential to attracting tech talent. We asked successful tech companies how theyre managing to fill their IT talent pipeline. 1. Use content to recruit. David Patterson, president of The Kineta Group, Inc., Tampa, builds his network by doing webinars targeting his candidate market. For example, if youre recruiting Java developers, find a Java expert and broker a deal where the expert gets a list of attendees and a chance to pitch services at the end of the call in exchange for their hosting the webinar. The key is to make the webinar informative and engaging. If webinars dont appeal to you, create a Facebook group or a website where you can gather a tribe of like-minded IT professionals. Content is a long-term strategy. If you lay the groundwork now, it greases the skids for when you do need talent. What I try to do is put out content other peoples content that I curate thats valuable to the audience. Its done wonders in terms of my visibility. When my clients have needs in my niche, it separates me from being just another IT recruiter, he says. 2. Engage potential employees with a unique and exciting vision. Treff LaPlante, founder and CEO of WorkXpress and CitizenDeveloper.com, overcomes the challenge of finding IT talent in his Central Pennsylvania market by sharing his companys vision: creating a software development language that non-technical people can use. LaPlante tells recruits how the company has realized that vision on a small scale and how the prospective employee can help to scale it up. They want to believe they are working on something that will change the industry or even the world, he says. People want to feel like their work matters for something more than just money. 3. Run fun events with a hook. Internal networking events with a catchy and desirable hook, such as an evening with craft beers, are a good way to expose potential recruits to your environment and culture, says LaCinda Clem, executive director of permanent placement services for Robert Half Technology. These events have to be coordinated, fun and consistent, she says. You want your technology team to see the value in participating and bringing along the right people in their network. You can also set up user group events via Meetup. Weve seen some great talent come together to solve issues or work on specific projects. Whats great about these kinds of events is you have naturally curious individuals who make a hobby out of their profession, which automatically lets an employer know theyre really invested in their craft, Clem says. This is more of a long-term investment where there are no guaranteed results in terms of recruitment, but the chance to find passionate professionals with a zest for learning and improving their craft is strong when they are able to bring any of these folks on board. 4. Offer an out-of-the-box employee benefit. Extra vacation days and deluxe coffee stations are nice incentives for employees, but providing unique benefits can make your company truly stand out. Employees at Left, a Canadian media and technology company, enjoy an unlimited number of paid days off to volunteer in the community. The program costs about 2.3% in lost productivity, says co-founder and CMOJohn Lyotier. Its an affordable benefit for what it brings to the team in regards to morale, differentiation, and sense of belonging. With todays hires, people are looking for more than just a job, Lyotier says. If you involve a candidates entire family and give them a place in which they can make a real and lasting difference, then you have something few companies can match. 5. Look outside your normal candidate pool. Keep your mind open to IT talent demographics that you havent previously tapped. Microsoft hires talent with autism, while SAP offers free training classes. If you can offer remote work, youll tap into a global workforce. As you set out to develop your own recruitmentstrategies, keep in mind that it may take additional time to develop talent outside of your go-to pool. Yet the long-term benefits can offset any initial costs in attracting todays high-demand, diverse IT sector. ISFJ-Your Myers Briggs Personality Type and Your Career

ISFJ-Your Myers Briggs Personality Type and Your Career ISFJ-Your Myers Briggs Personality Type and Your Career ISFJ is one of 16 personality types that are reported by the  Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a  personality inventory. Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers developed the MBTI based on psychiatrist Carl Jungs theory of personality. When you know your personality type, you can use it to  help you find a suitable career. Career development specialists believe that if an individual  chooses a career that is a good match for his or her personality type and other factors including interests, work-related values, and aptitudes, the chance of being satisfied with it is substantially increased. Many administer the MBTI to their clients.  You can also take an online version of the assessment. Before we continue, lets take a closer look at the MBTI. If you know the theory behind it, you will better be able to understand what your ISFJ type means and how it will play a role in your career planning. Carl Jung theorized that every individuals personality type is made up of how we like to energize (introversion vs. extroversion), take in information (sensing vs. intuition), make decisions (thinking vs. feeling), and live our lives (judging vs. perceiving). Being an ISFJ means you favor Introversion [I], Sensing [S], Feeling [F], and Judging [J]. Heres an explanation of what that means. I, S, F, and J: What Each Letter of Your Personality Type Code Means I: If your preference is introversion, it means your own thoughts and ideas energize you. You dont need to interact with other people to get motivated.S: As someone who prefers sensing, you use your five senses to process any information you receive. You are not one to look beyond what is currently right in front of you, for example, things you can see, touch, hear, smell and taste. You see the details rather than the patterns that emerge from them.F: Your feelings and values guide your decisions. You are sensitive to the needs of others and are reluctant to give criticism. J: Your preference for a judging lifestyle means you like structure. You are well-organized, and deadlines dont ruffle your feathers. You have no difficulty planning in advance to meet them. It is important to remember these are just your preferences. Pay attention to them, but do not let them dictate your life. While you may prefer to do something or live a particular way, you can do things differently or live a different way when a situation requires it. For example, you favor introversion over extroversion, but that doesnt mean you cant perform well if you have to be part of a team. You would  rather work alone, but you can work with others too. In addition, each pair of preferences is on a scale. Your MBTI results will show where on it you fall. You may be an extreme introvert, or you may be closer to the center of the scale. In that case, your preference for introversion wouldnt be as strong. You should also know that  your preferences interact with one another, so all four letters are important. Dont get hung up on the fact that you are an introvert or prefer judging. All four preferences influence who you are. Realize, too, that your preferences may change as you go through life. Using Your Code to Help You Make Career-Related Decisions And now your burning question: now that you know your personality type and what it means, how can you use it to find a suitable career? Lets first look at the middle two letters, S and F. As an S you are detail-oriented. You tend to be practical and pride yourself on your common sense. Occupations that involve solving concrete problems are typically a good fit for individuals who have an S in their personality type. However, ISFJs like using their feelings and values to guide their decision-making, as indicated by the F. Given both these preferences, you would probably enjoy solving problems while helping people, maybe even assisting them in solving problems.   Also consider your preferences for introversion- getting energy from within- and judging- your need for structure. You would enjoy working independently, in a structured environment. What You Should Ask an Employer When Youre Fired

What You Should Ask an Employer When You're Fired What You Should Ask an Employer When You're Fired Getting fired or laid off from your job can be very stressful. Your first instinct may be to get up and leave immediately following the conversation, but you shouldnt give up so easily. There are many questions you should ask your employer when you’re fired. Its important to find out exactly why your employment is being terminated if there are any steps you can take to have the decision reversed, and perhaps most importantly what, if any, the compensation youre entitled to following the firing. Questions to Ask When You’ve Been Fired After youre fired or laid-off, the conversation with your employer will depend on the circumstances surrounding your termination, in addition to your personal and professional goals at that point. In general, you will want to find out how losing your job is going to affect you immediately, as well as in the longer term. It’s legitimate to inquire about severance pay, unemployment, and what information will be shared with potential and future employers. Get the Facts If a personal or union contract protects you, you should ask for the employers justification to determine if they have legitimate grounds for their action. If like most workers, you are employed at will, the employer will not be required to furnish a rationale for your firing. However, most supervisors will be willing to discuss at least general reasons for the decision: performance and restructuring being among the most common. Check Whether You Could Appeal When you want to keep your job, you have nothing to lose by asking if there might be any leeway with their decision, or you can write an appeal letter. Also, even if you dont have contractual protections, most employers have a policy manual that underscores the conditions under which an employee can be terminated. An explanation for your firing may give you the opportunity to contest the action, but will also give you insight into how you can improve your work habits for a future job. If your employer has referenced a shortcoming of yours as grounds for your firing and you believe that you can address the concern over time, you might ask if you could be placed on probation for some time in lieu of immediate termination. You can explain that you would aggressively address the weakness during the probationary period and would appreciate re-evaluation after that time. Check Whether You Could Resign Instead of Being Fired You may want to ask if you would be allowed to resign instead of being fired if you want to avoid the stigma of a firing. However, if your employer agrees, you may jeopardize your eligibility for unemployment payments. So you might also ask your employer if they would agree not to contest any claim that you make for unemployment if you resign. Check Information the Company Gives During Reference Checks Also, if they agree to a resignation, you might ask for a letter of recommendation. You should also ask how the company will handle any inquiries about your tenure with the organization. Find out if they will share dates of employment like some organizations do, or if they will give the reason for your departure. Check on Severance and Vacation Pay and Benefits You should also inquire about any severance pay, compensation for unused vacation, sick time, and options for continuation of healthcare coverage for some time. Make sure you ask what steps you need to take to secure any compensation and to continue your health coverage.  Ask about your pension and 401k so that you understand any company rules governing those assets. Get Your Computer Files If you havent backed up any personal computer files on your office computer. This is something you should always do. You can ask for the opportunity to retrieve any important documents. Depending on the circumstances, you may not be allowed access to your files once you have been notified of your termination. Always keep your files backed up, or better yet, away from your work computer entirely. It would be unfortunate to lose everything in the event of an unexpected change in your employment situation. Keep it Professional During the conversation, resist the temptation to lash out at your employer, or any of your colleagues, in an unprofessional manner.  The satisfaction derived from any parting shots will be fleeting, but your last words will be remembered should anyone be asked, formally or informally, about your time with the organization. Even better, try to leave on a positive note, making your closing impression one of steady good judgment.

Codes and Standards Training Event Slated for New York in August

Codes and Standards Training Event Slated for New York in August Codes and Standards Training Event Slated for New York in August Codes and Standards Training Event Slated for New York in August July 22, 2016 ASME Training Development will present a live training event next month in New York where engineers and technical professionals will have the opportunity to learn about ASMEs Pressure Vessels, Piping, and Geometric Dimensioning Tolerancing Codes from the experts who helped write them. The program, which will consist of four short courses, will take place Aug. 22 to 26 at New Horizons career training center at 462 Seventh Ave. in Manhattan, N.Y. The first course, BPV Code, Section VIII, Division 1: Design Fabrication of Pressure Vessels, will provide attendees with a comprehensive introduction to the requirements of Section VIII, Div. 1 of ASMEs Boiler Pressure Vessel Code, focusing on pressure vessel design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing and documentation. By the end of the course, to be held Aug. 22 to 24, participants will be able to describe the background of the Code; explain how to apply the Code rules to more common design and fabrication situations; identify the calculations for some of the loadings and situations not addressed by the Code; and describe the preparation of design specifications, design reports, data reports, and other documentation. The course, Inspections, Repairs and Alterations of Pressure Equipment, on Aug. 25 and 26, will present attendees with an introduction to the requirements of various codes and standards that pertain to the inspection, repairs and alterations of pressure equipment and pressure vessels. The course will feature detailed coverage of the requirements of the National Board Inspection Code and the API-510, a brief introduction to API-579 Fitness-for-Service assessment, a review of simple flaw evaluation procedures, and a discussion of ASMEs Post Construction Committee activities and the documents published by the committee. The training event in New York will also include two courses focusing on the Y14.5 ASME Geometric Dimensioning Tolerancing (GDT) Standard. The first of these courses, Geometric Dimensioning Tolerancing Fundamentals 1, will take place on Aug. 22 and 23. The class, which combines lecture with animated graphics and video clips to ensure an engaging experience, will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental geometric concepts and enable them to interpret and explain the application of geometric symbols on drawings. Upon completion of the course, students will also be able to explain how to select datum reference frames properly as well as calculate position and profile tolerances. 3 personality tests you must take (+ what they mean for your work life)

3 personality tests you must take (+ what they mean for your work life) 3 personality tests you must take (+ what they mean for your work life) Buzzfeed alone has hundreds of  them ranging from “Which Sandwich Are You?” (I’m a hamburger with lettuce instead of buns by the way, and I feel attacked) to “Which Buzzfeed Quiz Are You.” While these are solid time wasters, they’re not going to gift you some lost truth about why you are the way you are. However, there are free personality tests out there that can spur valuable self-reflection and even help you in the workplace. Now, before you read any further, I have to say, no personality test can boil down your unique thoughts, feelings, experiences, and behaviors. So instead of looking at personality tests as comprehensive overviews of who  we are, let’s use them as tools. These tools, when wielded properly, can help you better empathize with your coworkers and boss, reflect on how you view yourself, and gain insight into how others might view you. Follow Ladders on Flipboard! Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The Four Tendencies We’re cheating a little bit with this first one. That’s because  The Four Tendencies  doesn’t gauge your personality, but rather, how you respond to expectation. The creator, Gretchen Rubin, explains that there are two types of expectation. Inner- which is something like a self-created New Year’s resolution- and outer- which are things like boss-assigned deadlines, or answering a friend. Your ‘tendency’ (either Upholder, Obliger, Rebel, or Questioner) is determined by how you respond to these expectations. Rubin argues that people who understand their tendency “make better decisions, meet deadlines…suffer less stress, and engage more deeply with others.” While this might seem like a lofty statement, I was pleasantly surprised by how learning my tendency- Obliger- and organizing my goals with my tendency in mind, helped quell some feelings of burn out and allowed me to work with a coworker more effectively. As an Obliger, I respond well to outer expectation. If a deadline is set by a coworker or boss, I’m the first to create an organized list of how we’re going to meet it. At my last job, I didn’t feel supported in this, so my perception was that I was the only one who cared about the task at hand. This lead to major feelings of burn out. Later,  I discovered  my coworker was a Questioner, meaning she responds best to inner expectation and needs to understand  why  a deadline  is set to move forward. Once we learned each other’s tendencies, we had an easier time communicating. I would explain more clearly why deadlines were set, and she  would be more intentional about setting top priorities so I wouldn’t become overwhelmed. Win, win! Myers-Briggs personality test Myers-Briggs  is taking over the world. Some employers  have even started asking for your  score in interviews! The  reason for this test’s success is two-fold. One, it’s a free quiz that takes less than 15 minutes, making it accessible. Two, it  measures personality traits on a contrasting spectrum,  which means the results  are read as black and white- making them easy to understand. I’m conflicted about this method of ‘scoring’, because I find people unique  in their shady grey areas. It can be confining, and often a gross oversimplification, to  label someone by a five-letter score. No one score is better than another, and no matter which letter we’re looking at, all of them have qualities that- if taken too far- can have negative consequences. So again, we won’t look at this test as an end-all-be-all, but as a tool for self-reflection. Reading your score Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I) The first letter in your score represents how you interact with your surroundings. Do you feel like your brain is firing on all cylinders- like you’re your best self- when you’re out with a group? So much so that you seek out these types of experiences? You’re exhibiting extraversion in a  majorway. On the flip side, if external  stimulus can become draining and overwhelming and you seek out solitary moments, you’re leaning toward introversion. Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N) If you’re trying to decipher why you focus on certain information more than others, this is the letter for you. ‘Sensing’ or observant individuals will focus on information that is delivered as tried and true. They tend to be pragmatic and thrive in routine. ‘Intuitive’ individuals enjoy ideas, novelty, and imaginative problem-solving. Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F) This letter interprets how you respond to emotions within yourself and others. For ‘Thinking’ individuals, subduing emotions is important, as they value efficiency and logic. Often, this type is misclassified as cold or unfeeling, when in reality they experience emotions, but might not view them as ‘useful’ in situations. ‘Feeling’ individuals, are more sensitive to their own and others emotions, potentially making this type more empathetic. This type can be misclassified as weak in the workplace when often, these are the people who will go above and beyond to fight for their principles and beliefs. Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P) This trait helps break down your decision making process and how you respond to structure. The ‘Judging’ trait responds best to certainty and order, and often  folks with this trait have contingency plans for every event. Complete with mental check-lists, this trait  translates to a strong work ethic but might be viewed as inflexible. The ‘Perceiving’ (or prospecting) trait responds more readily to unexpected challenges and  thrives in sifting through a variety of options. The big 5 personality test Also known as the 5 factors model, this personality test is the only one recognized by personality psychologists. (Psst, if you want to know more about this awesome sounding profession, check out this podcast  episode of Ologies.) What’s unique about this test is  that you are looking at 5 broad dimensions of how people differ, and instead of saying you are either ‘this’ or ‘that’, you are given a percentage. The 5 factors this test looks at are: Openness to experience Conscientiousness Extraversion Agreeableness Neuroticism Because this model is recognized in academia, there are a few studies that take advantage of this naming convention. One  that caught my eye talks about how people who exhibit a high percentage of conscientiousness might  find more professional success. It also shares  behaviors that contribute to conscientiousness- so if you didn’t score high in conscientiousness- you can fold these behaviors into your routine. A challenge with this test is that the agreeableness trait can be incredibly difficult to judge on your own. Depending on how self-assured you are, you might view yourself as more or less agreeable. Because of this, I recommend having a trusted friend or family member (that you feel safe with) take the test  as  you. It can be so eye-opening to compare these results, especially if you’ve ever wondered how other people view your actions. Other popular tests As someone who is constantly curious about ‘why I am, the way I am’- I’m elated whenever a new personality test comes on the scene. Below are a few more tests that I hope you enjoy taking as much as I did. The Hexaco Personality Inventory Enneagram Test Which Hogwarts House Are You In? (I’m only  kind of  kidding about this one.)
